A reason to exist

Gaara "visits" Lee at the hospital, and as soon as he sees that someone has brought Lee a flower, he gets a headache and remembers when Gai stopped him from killing Lee. Gaara moves closer towards the sleeping Lee on the bed, while struggling with the memories. He has started covering Lee with his sand, when something happens... Gaara can't move! The reason is simple. 
Unnoticed, Naruto and Shikamaru has entered the room, and Shikamaru is holding Gaara still with his Shadow copy jutsu. While being immobilised, Naruto punches Gaara good, then asks him what the heck he thinks he's doing. Gaara calmly answers that he was trying to kill Lee. 
Shikamaru demands to know why Gaara wants to kill Lee? Does he have a personal grudge against Lee? Just as calmly, Gaara answers that no, he doesn't have anything against Lee, he just wants to kill him. Naruto freaks out... (And probably the readers too.) ...and Shikamaru comments that Gaara must've had a pretty messed up childhood to be that self-centered.
By now, Shikamaru realises they're in trouble if Gaara tries anything... Shikamaru tries to bluff himself and Naruto out of the situatiion, but Gaara merely repeats that if they get in his way, he'll kill them. Naruto is pissed off by now and keeps challenging Gaara (stupid boy... o.o) but Shikamaru yells at him to cut it out because Gaara is like a monster. 
Bratty Naruto doesn't mind, he says with a grin that he has a real monster inside of him. I bet he got Gaara's attention with that... He comments that then he's the same as Naruto, because he was born a monster. By attaching a sand demon (Shukaku) to Gaara with the use of ninjutsu, Gaara came to life by killing his mother in the process. All of this to create the ultimate shinobi.
Shikamaru comments that using a posession jutsu to attach a demon to someone even before birth is going to far. Naruto reacts to this... Because he realises that both he and Gaara has a monster inside of them. Shikamaru thinks this is a weird way for a family to express their love, but Gaara rejects the whole idea. He thinks that his family is only pieces of meat connected to him by murderous intent and hatered... 
Gaara explains that he was created as the marsterpiece of the village and the Kazekage's son, and that he was spoiled silly as a kid. This was love, Gaara thought. Until that day when he was 6, when his father first tried to have him assassinated. The look on Gaara's face when he says this is more than a little bit insane... 
Apparently the villagers realised after a little while that Gaara was out of control and a danger to them rather than an asset. They realised their mistake, and now wanted to kill little six year old Gaara. Little Gaara started thinking... To the villagers, he was nothing but an object they wished would go away. No one wanted him. Gaara could see no purpose with his life at all. 
They all wanted him dead. However, you can't live without a reason to live, so Gaara came to the conclusion that he needed to prove his right to live. Needed to prove he was still alive, because without a purpse, he was just like dead. His purpose in life had to be to kill everyone but himself, six-year-old Gaara reasoned, 
and proceeded to kill every assassin his father sent his way. And they were many... While killing, Gaara felt alive. Felt the joy of being alive... As long as there were people in the world for him to kill, Gaara wouldn't die. Shikamaru freaks out when he hears this, but Naruto understands. He realises that he and Gaara are just the same, 
but while Naruto eventually found someone to acknowledge his existence, Gaara only got that acknowledgement by killing others. Naruto found friends, Gaara kept being completely alone in the world. By now, Naruto figures out he's in real trouble... And of course, 
Gaara asks them to let him experience that feeling again as he sends out his sand towards them. Before anthing interesting can happen, though, Gai suddenly appears and stops Gaara. As he sees Gai, Gaara gets another headache attack, and leaves with the comment that he'll definitely kill them one day.You can read an excerpt of this manga part here.
